The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law signed on June 18, 1878, by President Rutherford B. Hayes that limits the powers of the federal government and any other government entities such as county sheriffs and justices of the peace that are authorized to form a posse comitatus in the use of federal military personnel to execute the law within the United States.
