Overview

  • The Pentagon confirmed Monday that all 700 active-duty Marines sent to protect federal sites in Los Angeles will begin redeployment.
  • This drawdown follows last week’s removal of about 2,000 National Guard members from an initial force of roughly 4,000 federalized troops.
  • President Trump deployed the Marines and California National Guard under Title 10 in June over Gov. Gavin Newsom’s objections to secure federal buildings during ICE-related protests.
  • Federal appeals courts have upheld presidential authority to federalize the Guard despite lawsuits challenging state sovereignty and Posse Comitatus limits.
  • Pentagon officials estimated the monthlong operation cost about $134 million and said roughly 2,000 Guard soldiers remain guarding federal facilities.
