Overview

  • The Maharashtra government has withdrawn its April 16 order mandating Hindi as a compulsory third language for Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi- and English-medium schools.
  • Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced that Hindi will now be an optional subject, with schools accommodating other language choices based on student demand.
  • The decision followed widespread opposition from regional parties and public figures, who viewed the mandate as an imposition on Marathi identity and state autonomy.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified that Marathi remains the only compulsory language in the state, with flexibility for students to choose any third language, including Tamil, Telugu, or Kannada.
  • The revised policy aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which endorses a three-language formula without imposing any specific language.
