Zwinger Courtyard Restoration Nears Completion in Dresden

Archaeological digs prolonged the 2021–2023 project, lifting costs to about €15.4 million.

Overview

  • A dpa reporter observed the full courtyard view largely restored with construction machinery removed.
  • The western half remains open to visitors as a narrow fence still blocks the eastern side while gardeners prepare new lawns.
  • Work launched in 2021 and missed the original late‑2023 finish after proving more complex than planned.
  • Excavations running until March 2024 uncovered clues to 16th–18th century garden layouts and traces of 15th‑century suburban structures.
  • According to SIB, the courtyard budget rose by roughly €5 million over plan and forms part of about €222 million invested in the Zwinger ensemble since 1991.
