Zwinger Courtyard Fully Reopens After Multi-Year Restoration in Dresden

The four-and-a-half-year project blends heritage restoration with new infrastructure to ready the site for major public use.

Overview

  • The refurbishment, launched in February 2021, cost about €17 million and returns the entire baroque garden to unrestricted access.
  • Work delivered new paths, historically modeled lawns, renovated fountain basins and modern lighting, plus an underground network for drainage, water, power and data.
  • Archaeological investigations during construction uncovered evidence of 16th–18th century garden designs and 15th century suburban structures.
  • Saxony officials marked the completion at a ceremony where Minister-President Michael Kretschmer and Finance Minister Christian Piwarz moved aside the construction fence.
  • Large events are scheduled again, including three sold-out Purple Disco Machine concerts on May 22–24 with roughly 9,000 attendees per night and the spring return of 100 orange trees.
