Zvezda Hands Over Russia’s First Arctic-Class LNG Carrier to Sovcomflot

The lead ARC7 vessel for Arctic LNG-2 was delivered for Northern Sea Route operations after completion of sea, gas trials in Russia’s Far East.

Overview

  • Aleksey Kosygin is the lead ship in a three-vessel series that Zvezda is building for Novatek and Sovcomflot under the Arctic LNG-2 program.
  • The tanker underwent sea and gas trials in November 2025, marking the first gas trials conducted in the Russian Far East.
  • Classed ARC7, the carrier is designed to operate independently in ice thicker than two meters.
  • The ship holds over 172,000 cubic meters of LNG and features a 300-meter length, 48.8-meter beam, roughly 81,000-ton deadweight, a 60 MW power plant, and three propulsor units produced by Zvezda’s Sapfir plant.
  • Sovcomflot executives say the series is intended to enable year-round shipping on the Northern Sea Route while advancing domestic shipbuilding capacity developed at Zvezda under a Rosneft-led project.
