ZSI to Partner With Army on Edible Wildlife Research

The agreement will help catalog nutrient-rich species in remote Himalayan regions for military survival training.

Overview

  • ZSI will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Army’s Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School on June 30 to launch joint surveys of edible fauna and flora.
  • Researchers will assess the nutritional value of plant and animal species in border areas of Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram to inform army survival protocols.
  • The Animal Taxonomy Summit-2025 begins July 1 in Kolkata with over 500 delegates from the US, UK, Ghana and other countries discussing systematics and conservation.
  • ZSI will unveil Animal Discoveries-2024, detailing more than 600 new species, and release version 2.0 of the Checklist of Fauna of India cataloguing 105,244 species and subspecies.
  • The finale of a 110-hour hackathon on biodiversity conservation and climate change will also conclude on June 30, featuring solutions from 16 regional ZSI centers.
