Zoram People's Movement Ousts BJP-Led Executive in Chakma District Council

The ZPM, bolstered by eight defectors from the BJP, is set to form a new executive with chairman Lakkhan Chakma under consideration for the chief executive role.

Overview

  • The council removed Molin Kumar Chakma’s BJP-led executive on June 16 after a no-confidence vote secured support from 15 of 17 elected members.
  • ZPM’s Doymoy Daveng Chakma initiated the motion by highlighting the BJP’s loss of majority backing.
  • On June 2, eight BJP councillors defected to the ZPM, elevating its strength to 16 of the 20 elected seats in the CADC.
  • During the special session in Kamalanagar, one member voted against the motion and Rashik Mohan Chakma of the MNF abstained.
  • With a clear majority, the ZPM is set to appoint a new executive committee and is considering chairman Lakkhan Chakma as the next chief executive member.
