Zoox Starts Mapping Washington, D.C. for Robotaxi Testing

The Amazon-owned company begins a small, safety-driver mapping phase in the capital ahead of supervised trials later this year.

Overview

  • Zoox designated the District as its eighth U.S. test market and its first in the Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Initial operations use retrofitted Toyota Highlanders with safety drivers to manually map a geofenced area downtown.
  • The company did not disclose fleet size, saying only that a small number of vehicles will start and expand over time.
  • Supervised autonomous runs with human operators are planned to begin later this year, following the mapping phase.
  • Zoox holds a federal exemption for research demonstrations but still seeks approval for commercial service while expanding activity in cities such as Las Vegas and San Francisco.
