Zoox Launches Free Public Robotaxi Rides on the Las Vegas Strip

The Amazon-owned startup cannot charge fares until state regulators sign off.

Overview

  • Anyone with the Zoox app can hail the company’s steering‑wheel‑free vehicles at five designated pickup and drop-off points, including Resorts World, AREA15, Luxor, New YorkNew York and Topgolf.
  • Rides are free at launch, with trips limited to about three miles and seating for up to four passengers.
  • Zoox is deploying roughly 50 purpose-built vehicles across Las Vegas and San Francisco, with most in Nevada and no safety drivers on board; remote human assistance is available when requested by the vehicle.
  • NHTSA granted Zoox an exemption last month to demonstrate its custom design on public roads, which does not authorize commercial, paid service.
  • Zoox opened a San Francisco waitlist and says paid operations will begin after approvals, as it ramps production at its Hayward, California facility.
