Zoo Dresden Opens Expanded Giraffe and Zebra Enclosure

The €500,000 donation-funded expansion boosts animal welfare to highlight World Giraffe Day conservation.

Overview

  • The zoo inaugurated the enlarged giraffe and zebra enclosure in mid-June after roughly four months of construction that began with the demolition of the former terrarium.
  • The outdoor space now measures about 2,800 square metres, roughly one third more room than before, giving the animals more space to move and new viewing angles for visitors.
  • Three Kordofan giraffes named Diko, Tessa and Gaia and four Chapman plains zebras now occupy the redesigned area.
  • The upgrade was paid for entirely by donations totaling €500,000, split evenly between the Verein Zoofreunde Dresden association and other donors.
  • New animal amenities include a wooden shelter for zebras that allows near-constant outdoor access, two sand pits and a heated water trough, and the opening was timed to reinforce local support and conservation messaging around World Giraffe Day.
