Zonal Commissioners Take Charge After Telangana Formalizes GHMC Expansion

The reorganization creates 12 zones with 60 circles across roughly 2,000 sq km to serve an estimated population above 1.34 crore.

Overview

  • The state issued a Gazette notification on December 25 confirming 300 newly delimited wards and completing the merger of 27 urban local bodies into the GHMC.
  • On Friday, the appointed zonal commissioners assumed charge across the 12 zones, moving the enlarged corporation into operational rollout.
  • The government publicly posted detailed ward boundaries at circle, zonal and head office buildings to support the transition.
  • Six new zones were added—Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Golconda and Quthbullapur—joining the existing Charminar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, Khairatabad and LB Nagar zones.
  • A new Special Chief Secretary for metropolitan area and urban development covering HMDA limits was created, with Jayesh Ranjan appointed to the post, as authorities cited the 2026–27 census as a driver for finalizing boundaries.
