Zomato and Blinkit Report Record New Year’s Eve Orders Despite Gig-Worker Strike

Platforms reported record New Year’s Eve orders after offering higher festive incentives.

Overview

  • Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal said Zomato and Blinkit fulfilled over 75 lakh orders on December 31 with more than 4.5 lakh delivery partners, crediting police support and noting incentives were in line with typical New Year’s Eve rates.
  • Ahead of the strike, companies raised payouts that they described as standard for the holiday rush, with Zomato offering Rs 120–150 per order and up to ~Rs 3,000 for the day, and Swiggy advertising up to Rs 10,000 across Dec 31–Jan 1 and up to Rs 2,000 in peak hours.
  • Unions including TGPWU, IFAT and GIPSWU said over 1.0–1.7 lakh workers joined the walkout and alleged platforms used law enforcement and short-term incentives to blunt its impact, disputing claims of uninterrupted service.
  • Multiple outlets reported limited disruption and strong order volumes across major cities, with magicpin saying its services saw no impact and data pointing to heavy evening demand.
  • Worker demands center on scrapping 10‑minute delivery promises, restoring earlier payout structures, and securing legal recognition and social security, while Goyal defended quick‑commerce timelines as driven by store density rather than unsafe riding speeds.
