Zojila Tunnel Set for Final Breakthrough

Completing the last stretch of excavation will allow lining and systems work to begin and push the project toward year‑round road access with stronger military logistics.

Overview

  • A ceremonial final breakthrough of the main 13.153 km bore is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari attending to mark completion of the excavation phase.
  • The tunnel is a single‑tube, two‑lane horseshoe-shaped road tunnel being built by MEIL for NHIDCL at about 11,578 feet and is part of a roughly 30.9 km corridor of tunnels, approach roads and bridges.
  • After breakthrough the project will move into concrete lining, civil finishes and installation of electrical, SCADA and ventilation systems, and officials expect the corridor to open in January–February 2028.
  • Construction used the New Austrian Tunnelling Method to manage highly variable Himalayan geology and safety features include three deep shafts (the largest reported at 474.3 m); the project recorded about 10 million safe man‑hours despite several avalanche incidents including the January 2023 Army rescue.
  • Year‑round connectivity is expected to cut travel between Baltal and Meenamarg from hours to roughly 15–20 minutes, boost tourism and trade, and give faster, more reliable logistics for residents and security forces while sustaining significant local employment during construction.
