Overview

  • Mamdani led former Governor Andrew Cuomo with about 43 percent of first-choice votes in Tuesday’s primary, and final ranked-choice totals are expected next week.
  • The 33-year-old self-described democratic socialist centered his campaign on cost-of-living relief measures such as free bus service, universal childcare, rent freezes and a higher minimum wage funded by taxes on the wealthy.
  • If certified as the nominee, he would become New York City’s first Muslim and first Indian American mayor and boost turnout among young, Asian and Muslim voters.
  • In November he will face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running as an independent and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a three-candidate general election.
  • Republicans have already vowed to use Mamdani’s socialist label and his statements on Israel and Palestine to challenge Democrats in next year’s midterms.
