Zoho’s Arattai Messaging App Tops 1 Million Downloads After Ministerial Boost

The spike has pushed Zoho to shore up infrastructure for a privacy-focused app built for slow networks.

Overview

  • Daily sign-ups jumped from roughly 3,000 to about 350,000 within three days following Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s call to use Indian-made apps.
  • Google Play installs crossed 1 million and Arattai said it reached No. 1 in the App Store’s social networking category.
  • Zoho acknowledged OTP delays, contact-sync issues and call failures during the rush and says OTP delivery has been fixed as it scales servers.
  • The app offers 1:1 and group chats, media and file sharing, stories and broadcast channels, multi-device support including desktop and Android TV, and a pledge not to monetize user data.
  • Reports say audio and video calls use end-to-end encryption, but coverage remains mixed on whether chats have WhatsApp-style E2EE.
