- Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s foreign minister, confirmed the death of Henry Martin Douglas Macharaga, 52, and said officials are coordinating repatriation with his family, TDI and the embassy in Buenos Aires.
- Macharaga was working in Argentina through The Development Initiative to provide explosive-clearance services for YPF tied to past exploration activity.
- A YPF spokesperson described the device as a seismic booster similar to charges buried roughly half a century ago, and the company confirmed the Aug. 19 incident without further comment.
- The explosion occurred on Ruta Nacional 34 near General Mosconi in Salta, and authorities say the case remains under investigation.
- Macharaga hailed from Chirumanzu in Zimbabwe’s Midlands, was married with two children, and had decades of demining experience across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
