Overview

  • BC Highway Patrol’s month-long High Risk Driving and Motorcycle Awareness campaign generated over 9,600 speeding tickets province-wide in May.
  • This outcome compares favourably to an average of four road deaths during the same long weekend between 2019 and 2023 and three fatalities in 2024.
  • Officers intercepted extreme speeding cases, including a Tesla clocked at 191 km/h on Highway 1 near Golden and an impaired driver doing 166 km/h on Highway 3/95 in the East Kootenays.
  • Supt. Mike Coyle credited high-visibility enforcement for preventing fatalities and said officers still encounter too many examples of irresponsible driving.
