Zelensky, Trump Hold "Very Positive" Call as U.S. Weighs Tomahawks and Air-Defense Support for Ukraine

Kyiv will send a senior team to Washington next week to press for air-defense aid after a sweeping Russian strike on its power grid.

Overview

  • The White House confirmed the leaders spoke Saturday, and Zelensky described the roughly 30-minute call as “very positive and productive.”
  • Two sources told Axios the pair discussed possible Tomahawk long-range missiles for Ukraine; Kyiv’s foreign ministry says technical talks are “very detailed and active,” with no U.S. decision yet as Moscow warns of escalation.
  • Zelensky said they are working on “concrete agreements” to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses after he briefed Trump on strikes that hit the energy system.
  • Ukraine will send a delegation next week led by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko with Andriy Yermak and Vladyslav Vlasiuk to discuss air defense, energy support, sanctions steps, negotiations, and frozen Russian assets.
  • The talks follow one of the largest recent Russian attacks on the grid, with hundreds of drones and missiles causing blackouts and at least 20 injuries before power was restored to more than 800,000 people in Kyiv.
