ZDF Moves New Year’s Eve Broadcast From Berlin to Hamburg’s HafenCity

Berlin’s subsidy cutoff pushed the long-running TV event to relocate, with Hamburg’s financial backing still unclear.

Overview

  • ZDF confirmed it will air "Willkommen 2026" live on December 31 from Hamburg’s HafenCity at the Überseequartier, featuring a floating stage and fireworks over the Elbe starting at 20:15.
  • Andrea Kiewel and Johannes B. Kerner will host the show, with ZDF promising high-profile music acts and further program details to be announced.
  • The move follows Berlin’s decision to end public funding for the Brandenburger Tor celebration, after which the private organizer canceled the event there.
  • Hamburg’s First Mayor Peter Tschentscher welcomed the broadcast, and ZDF entertainment chief Oliver Heidemann said the production aims to deliver memorable images from the city.
  • Local reporting indicates the Überseequartier site could accommodate roughly 5,000 attendees, a considerably smaller crowd than past Berlin gatherings, while any Hamburg subsidy has not been specified.
