ZDF Ends Satellite SD Broadcasts on Tuesday, Shifting to HD-Only

The shift follows KEF guidance to cut distribution costs by ending duplicate SD/HD feeds.

Overview

  • The SD switch-off on 18 November covers ZDF, ZDFinfo, ZDFneo, 3sat and KiKA on satellite.
  • Cable operators, including Vodafone, are aligning with the date to discontinue SD carriage of the ZDF channels.
  • Viewers with SD-only receivers must upgrade to HD-capable equipment to continue watching via satellite.
  • HD receivers can be used with non-HD televisions, and a channel rescan may be required to find the HD versions.
  • KEF previously estimated annual savings of about €13.7 million from ending SD distribution, and ARD completed its SD shutdown earlier this year.
