Overview
- ZDF, which announced the decision on Friday, July 17, 2026, said the current team’s 12th season will air from September 2026 before a final four-episode season in 2027 and a 90-minute concluding film to be shot in 2027.
- The broadcaster described the choice as made after careful consideration and thanked the cast and production while stressing the Freitagskrimi slot will continue with a stronger focus on fewer formats.
- Lead actors Wanja Mues and Antoine Monot, who have led the revival since 2014, are expected to appear in the final episodes and the 2027 film and have expressed mixed sadness and gratitude at the planned ending.
- With the announced schedule the Monot–Mues revival will reach about 54 episodes plus the final film, closing a series that began in 1981 and was shaped for decades by Claus Theo Gärtner’s Matula.
- The end frees up the Friday crime slot for ZDF to promote other series such as the new Bodensee-set Mordufer and to present a narrower, curated Krimi lineup going forward.
