Zareen, Borgohain Lead India’s 20-Boxer Squad for World Boxing Championships in Liverpool

The Liverpool meet debuts under World Boxing with a deep field that could hand India’s returning stars difficult early bouts.

Overview

  • The championships run September 4–14 at the M&S Bank Arena with more than 550 boxers from over 65 countries, including 17 Paris 2024 medallists.
  • Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen begins her 51kg title defense in her first international outing since the Paris Olympics.
  • Tokyo bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain enters the 75kg draw after a long layoff, and limited activity may leave both her and Zareen unseeded.
  • India’s men bring a largely new lineup, with 2023 medallists Nishant Dev, Deepak Bhoria and Mohammad Hussamuddin missing from the squad.
  • Bouts use a knockout format and Ten Point Must scoring with two bronzes awarded, and the key rounds are set for September 10 (quarter-finals), September 12–13 (semi-finals) and September 14 (finals).
