Zano Restarts Chain to Block 3,833,000 After Gateway Address Exploit

The rollback shows that tokens moved off-chain cannot be recovered.

Overview

  • The team confirmed late Sunday that Zano restarted its mainnet from block 3,833,000, removing roughly 30 days of transactions to erase activity created by the exploit.
  • A newly added Gateway Addresses feature used an account-style on‑chain balance for exchanges and bridges and contained a flaw that let unauthorized ZANO and fUSD (Freedom Dollar) be created.
  • Zano says ordinary wallet spend keys and transaction privacy were not compromised and it has published emergency client v2.2.3.600 that miners, nodes and services must adopt to follow the recovered chain.
  • The project says reimbursements for legitimate losses will come from the development fund, team holdings and committed large holders with no new ZANO to be issued, and a formal claims process has not yet been published.
  • The rollback cannot undo transfers that were settled on other blockchains, third‑party exchanges paused ZANO/fUSD operations during migration, ZANO’s price fell about 12–13%, and the rescue mirrors recent recovery efforts on other chains where off‑chain value stayed irrecoverable.
