Zacatecas Highways Reopen After Coordinated Overnight Arson Blockades

Officials say the attacks likely followed a security clash a day earlier in Tabasco municipality.

Overview

  • Armed groups set fire to buses and cargo trucks and forced drivers to block routes across Calera, Villanueva, Fresnillo, Río Grande, Cuauhtémoc and Sombrerete in the early hours of Oct. 3.
  • Federal and state forces activated the Plan Antibloqueos and deployed the Army, National Guard, state police and the state prosecutor’s office to clear roads and aid motorists.
  • Closures hit federal highways 45, 49 and 54, with motorists stranded as spike strips were scattered on the pavement, according to videos and eyewitness accounts.
  • By Friday evening, the state reported control of the situation and the gradual restoration of traffic, with security patrols and removal of burned vehicles continuing.
  • Casualty and damage tallies remain inconsistent: initial official updates noted no injuries, while a later report cited at least 37 vehicles burned and one death as authorities verify figures.
