Yusef Salaam Appointed as NYC Council's Public Safety Committee Chair in Major Shake-Up

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams has appointed Yusef Salaam, a member of the 'Central Park 5' who was wrongfully imprisoned as a teenager, as the chairman of the Council’s Public Safety Committee.
Salaam's appointment is seen as significant due to his unique experience with the criminal justice system and his commitment to public safety measures that emphasize restorative justice.
Adams also removed several left-leaning members from their committee chairs, a move seen by some as politically motivated retribution.
Among those removed from their chairs are Tiffany Cabán, Chi Ossé and Shahana Hanif, all members of the Council’s Progressive Caucus who voted against last year’s city budget.
Despite the shake-up, some Progressive Caucus members received new appointments, including Sandy Nurse who was selected to chair the Criminal Justice Committee.
