Overview

• Deputies responded Tuesday around 7:22 p.m. to reports of a man firing a gun and making suicidal statements near South Avenue 12 E and 36th Place in Yuma’s Foothills area.
• The man was identified by authorities as 77-year-old Lewis Berne of Yuma.
• YCSO reports Berne ignored commands, moved in and out of the home while armed, and fired his handgun before deputies shot him.
• Deputies performed life-saving measures and transported Berne to Onvida Health, where he was later pronounced dead.
• No other injuries were reported, and the deputies involved were placed on modified duty during the ongoing inquiry.
