Yuki Matsui Signs $28 Million, 5-Year Contract with Padres

The 28-year-old left-handed pitcher, a five-time All-Star in Japan, is set to join the major leagues.

Yuki Matsui, a 28-year-old left-handed pitcher from Japan, has agreed to a $28 million, five-year contract with the San Diego Padres.
Matsui, who stands at 5-foot-8, is expected to be one of the shortest pitchers in the major leagues.
He has a track record of consistent performance and excellence in Japan, where he was a five-time All-Star for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and led the Pacific League in saves in 2019, 2022 and this year.
Matsui has a 2.40 career ERA, 236 saves and a 1.11 WHIP in Nippon Professional Baseball, and became the youngest pitcher in the Japanese major leagues to reach 200 saves.
He was a free agent due to his nine years of service time, so no posting fee is involved in his acquisition by the Padres. The deal includes opt-outs.
