YPF and Essential Energy Launch $400 Million JV to Repurpose San Lorenzo Refinery Into Sustainable Aviation Fuel Biorrefinery

NYSE investor presentations, RIGI incentive filings and ISCC certification will precede the start of phased construction

Overview

  • Santa Fe Bio will convert the idle San Lorenzo refinery into a biorrefinery producing primarily SAF and some HVO under a US$400 million, two-phase investment.
  • Essential Energy will hold operational control of the facility, drawing on its experience in first- and second-generation biofuels to oversee pre-treatment and conversion processes.
  • The partners plan to present the project to New York Stock Exchange investors as they structure financing against projected fuel sales.
  • The venture will seek Argentina’s RIGI incentives and pursue ISCC certification to tap domestic markets and export sustainable aviation fuel to Europe and the United States.
  • Engineering studies, regulatory reviews and phased construction are set to begin, with initial SAF output in the first phase and full-scale operations expected by the end of the decade.
