YouTube Lets Viewers Hide End Screens and Removes Hover-to-Subscribe on Desktop

YouTube says internal tests show minimal effect on creator metrics.

Overview

  • A new Hide button in the top-right of the player lets viewers dismiss end-screen pop-ups on a per-video basis.
  • The setting applies only to the current video, with an option to tap Show to restore the elements.
  • YouTube has begun rolling out the change and has also removed the hover-to-subscribe action on channel watermarks for desktop.
  • The company cites user feedback seeking fewer distractions and a clearer view of the final moments of videos.
  • YouTube reports under 1.5% fewer views from end screens and about 0.05% of subscriptions from the watermark hover, and creators can still add end screens and watermarks.
