Youth Alcohol Poisoning Cases in Germany Drop by 19% in 2023

New data reveals a significant decline in hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning among 10- to 19-year-olds, continuing a five-year downward trend.

The number of alcohol poisoning cases among 10- to 19-year-olds in Germany fell from 11,472 in 2022 to 9,263 in 2023, a 19% decrease.
The largest decline was observed in boys aged 15 to 19, with cases dropping by 21%, while cases among girls in the same age group fell by 14%.
Among children aged 10 to under 15, hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning decreased by 21%, with 506 boys and 967 girls affected in 2023.
This marks the fifth consecutive year of declining alcohol poisoning cases among youth, according to data from the Statistische Bundesamt and DAK-Gesundheit.
Prevention efforts, including the 'bunt statt blau' campaign, aim to educate students about the risks of binge drinking and contribute to this positive trend.
