A coordinated crane lift followed controlled dam releases to still the canal.

Overview

  • The rescue concluded on Tuesday after roughly three days with the 12–13-year-old male lifted from the canal near Shivanasamudra in Mandya district.
  • Forest officials worked with Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini dam authorities to cut outflow and stabilize water conditions for the operation.
  • An 80-tonne crane brought from Bengaluru, supported by two additional cranes, hoisted the elephant from a canal about 60 feet deep after a platform was prepared.
  • Veterinarians darted the tusker with precautions to prevent water entering its trunk, then gave an antidote after checks found no injuries.
  • The animal was released into the adjoining Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, with drone-based health monitoring planned for about a month.
