Overview
- The southern edge of self-identified "the North" runs roughly from Shrewsbury to Grimsby, while the northern edge of "the South" runs from the Severn to Great Yarmouth.
- In the conventional northern regions, 91–95% call themselves Northern, and in the South East, South West and London, 81–94% say they live in the South.
- Northern identity extends into the Midlands, notably High Peak in Derbyshire (94%) and Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire (75%), with further majorities in parts of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.
- Eastern counties diverge, with only about a third in Norfolk and northern Cambridgeshire identifying as Southern and a clear split inside Cambridgeshire between its southern districts (72% Southern) and northern districts (59% neither).
- Most Midlanders opt for "neither"—78% in the West Midlands and 69% in the East Midlands—with smaller pockets of neither-ness in the South such as Milton Keynes (25%).
