YouGov Finds Record 91% Negative Rating for Prince Andrew

Fresh scrutiny of who visited his home in 2006 helps explain the slump without denting majority support for the monarchy.

Overview

  • New YouGov tracking shows 91% of Britons view Prince Andrew negatively, up from 87% in August, with only 4% favourable and 81% now very negative compared with 69% in August.
  • The Prince and Princess of Wales remain strongly viewed at 76% and 73% positive respectively, with Princess Anne at 70% and King Charles at 62%.
  • Support for keeping the monarchy stands at 62%, though negative views of the royal family and the institution have each risen four points since August to 34% and 36%.
  • Recent reports say Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Harvey Weinstein visited Andrew’s Royal Lodge residence in 2006, adding new detail to longstanding questions about his associations.
  • Separate reports indicate Andrew is set to leave Royal Lodge, and the campaign group Republic says it has engaged lawyers to examine a possible private prosecution; he has consistently denied allegations and the Metropolitan Police previously declined to reopen a criminal inquiry.
