Yosemite Ends Firefall Reservations, Moves to On-the-Ground Crowd Control

The park will replace the reservation system with increased staffing to manage on-site traffic.

Overview

  • Reservations are no longer required for the 2026 Firefall viewing window, scheduled for Feb. 10–26, with the effect typically visible for 5–15 minutes at sunset.
  • Superintendent Ray McPadden said “boots on the ground” will be the principal strategy following evaluation of recent pilot years.
  • Visitors are directed to park at the Yosemite Falls lot near Yosemite Valley Lodge and walk about 1.5 miles to viewing areas near the El Capitan Picnic Area.
  • If the Yosemite Falls lot is full, the park advises driving to Yosemite Village or Curry Village and using free shuttles back to the Yosemite Falls area.
  • One lane of Northside Drive will be closed to create pedestrian space during viewing periods, with tourism groups welcoming the access change as environmental advocates warn of crowding and resource impacts.
