Yorkshire Water Confronts Probe and Political Pressure Over £1.3m Undisclosed CEO Payments

Metro mayors and Yorkshire MPs have written to chair Vanda Murray to demand a board meeting after offshore payments to the CEO emerged.

Overview

  • Nicola Shaw received a total of £1.3m via Jersey-based Kelda Holdings between April 2023 and March 2025, which was not disclosed in Yorkshire Water’s annual reports.
  • Ofwat has opened an investigation to determine if the concealed payments breach a government ban on executive bonuses at six water companies.
  • The mayors of West Yorkshire, Hull & East Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and York, along with regional MPs, have formally demanded a meeting with the board.
  • Yorkshire Water insists the payments complied with regulations, were funded by shareholders rather than bill-payers and were appropriate for work with the parent group.
  • Trust in the company is undermined by planned 41% household bill rises by 2030 and previous penalties including a £40m fine for sewage spills and an £865,000 wildlife discharge fine.
