Yorkshire Reservoirs Sink to 30.6% as Drought Persists

Parched ground is soaking up recent rain, preventing a recovery in supplies.

Overview

  • Reservoir storage stands at 30.6% of capacity, down 2.01 percentage points from last week and far below the 71.7% seasonal average.
  • Water demand remains above 1.2 billion litres per day, keeping pressure on depleted stocks.
  • Emergency measures include a Defra order allowing up to 60,000 cubic metres per day to be abstracted at Moor Monkton for up to six months when River Ouse flow thresholds are met, alongside permits on the Ouse, Wharfe and 19 reservoirs.
  • Recent showers have slowed declines in some areas but most rainfall has been absorbed by very dry soils and vegetation, so reservoir levels continue to fall.
  • Yorkshire Water says it is fixing more than 800 leaks each week and reports a 10% reduction in domestic water use.
