Yerba Mate Exports Set Record as Farmers Paid Below Costs After Deregulation

Government data highlight cheaper yerba in real terms since DNU 70/2023, contrasting with INYM estimates of unsustainable farmgate returns.

Overview

  • INYM reported a monthly export record of 7,255,770 kilos in September and a 26.46% rise in January–September shipments to 41,954,076 kilos versus a year earlier.
  • Domestic market dispatches reached 207,103,486 kilos in the first nine months of 2025, up 7.06% year over year, according to INYM.
  • INYM’s new cost grid estimates 423.99 pesos per kilo to produce green leaf at the dryer gate, or 551.19 pesos with a 30% profit margin.
  • Producers report payments around 300 pesos per kilo, with local ranges from roughly 180 to 305 pesos, and say they are cutting fertilization and field maintenance to cope.
  • The Ministry of Deregulation says real retail prices fell 44.3% since the 2023 decree and cites higher 2024 output and exports, while industry figures such as Alejandro Cacace praised lower raw material prices and drew backlash from provincial yerba officials.
