Yemen’s STC Rejects Riyadh TV ‘Dissolution’ as Coerced

Saudi-backed forces retook southern areas the group seized in December, intensifying a rift with the UAE.

Overview

  • STC secretary-general Abdulrahman al-Subaihi announced the council’s dissolution on Yemeni TV from Riyadh, in a statement carried by government media.
  • STC leaders based outside Saudi Arabia called the declaration a political farce, said their delegation is under house arrest, and demanded its release.
  • Saudi officials have not publicly commented on the group’s status, as analysts framed the move as Riyadh consolidating control in the south.
  • STC leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi was taken to Abu Dhabi this week and was expelled from Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council after skipping Riyadh talks.
  • The STC said it held an extraordinary meeting that deemed the Riyadh announcement null, called for protests in southern cities, and Aden authorities issued a directive banning demonstrations.
