Yemen Ends UAE Defense Pact After Saudi Strike on Mukalla as Emirates Announce Pullout

The rupture lays bare divisions inside Yemen's presidency.

Overview

  • Presidential Council chief Raschad al-Alimi declared a 90-day state of emergency and a 72-hour air, sea and land blockade following STC advances in Hadramaut and al-Mahra.
  • The Saudi-led coalition said it conducted a limited operation at Mukalla port targeting weapons and vehicles unloaded from two UAE-linked ships, as Riyadh warned Emirati actions were "extremely dangerous."
  • Backed by a Saudi-supported 24-hour deadline to leave, the UAE said it will withdraw remaining forces and dissolve its remaining anti-terror teams in Yemen, calling the move voluntary.
  • Abu Dhabi denied supplying arms to separatists and said the cargo consisted of vehicles for its own troops, rejecting the coalition’s accusations.
  • Al-Alimi’s decision to revoke the pact and order Emirati withdrawal drew objections from four UAE-aligned members of the eight-member council, while the STC said it will not relinquish newly held territory.
