Yellow Wind Alert Covers Eight Argentine Provinces as Zonda and Westerlies Strengthen

A southern cold front will trail the winds, driving a sharp cool-down with scattered storms before a gradual weekend improvement.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national meteorological service has a yellow alert active Wednesday for the extreme west of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Río Negro, Chubut, Mendoza, San Luis, Córdoba and Neuquén.
  • Zonda conditions are expected along the Andean foothills with sustained winds of 30–45 km/h and gusts up to 75 km/h, reducing visibility and briefly raising heat sensation in southern Mendoza.
  • Patagonian areas are forecast to see west winds of 40–60 km/h with gusts near 90 km/h, with locally stronger bursts possible.
  • Local guidance for Mendoza calls for afternoon and evening Zonda in General Alvear and San Rafael with a high near 32°C and a low around 11°C before a frontal cool-down and scattered storms in the following days.
  • The SMN recommends avoiding outdoor activities, securing loose objects, monitoring official updates and keeping an emergency bag with essentials ready.
