Year-End Heat Triggers Orange Alert for Buenos Aires as Peru Keeps Advisory, With Storm and Wind Risks Elsewhere

  • Argentina’s meteorological service put the Buenos Aires metropolitan area under an orange alert for extreme heat on Dec. 31, with the city forecast to reach about 39°C.
  • The SMN issued yellow alerts for storms in parts of Jujuy, Misiones, San Juan, San Luis and Mendoza, and for strong winds in southern Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, where gusts could top 100 km/h.
  • Mar del Plata recorded about 37.9°C on Dec. 30, and forecasts call for New Year’s Eve gusts near 59 km/h as temperatures ease slightly on Jan. 1.
  • Peru’s Senamhi maintained its Dec. 29–31 notice for Lima and 11 regions, citing higher daytime temperatures, elevated UV radiation, possible precipitation and winds around 45 km/h.
  • Across the Atlantic, Galicia in Spain expected a cool, dry and mostly clear Dec. 31, with daytime highs near 10–13°C and no rain forecast.
