Yape Rolls Out Anonymous In-App Extortion Reporting as BCP Launches Emergency Card Blocks

The measures reflect new government rules responding to Peru’s spike in cellphone thefts.

Overview

  • Yape activated a Report Extortion option that lets its roughly 15 million users flag suspect accounts anonymously in compliance with the latest regulation.
  • CEO Raimundo Morales said each submission will be evaluated and can be shared to support investigations by the relevant authorities.
  • To file a report, users open the transaction, choose I need help, select Report extortion, and provide details of the case.
  • Separately, BCP introduced an Emergency Block that lets customers disable debit and credit cards in real time at more than 10,000 BCP Agents using a DNI and card PIN without internet access.
  • Osiptel reports more than 4,000 cellphone thefts daily in Peru, and specialists caution that submitting a false extortion report may constitute a criminal offense.
