German voluntarily entered inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.
He was recently placed on the restricted list by the Yankees.
German threw a perfect game in June but has struggled overall this season.
He has a history of past troubles including suspensions.
This is the second time in recent years a Yankees starter has entered alcohol treatment mid-season.
