Yankees Finalize Caballero Deal, Send Prospect Marshall Toole to Rays

The 22-year-old Single-A outfielder arrives as a speed-first, non–40-man addition following a breakout on-base season.

Overview

  • Both teams announced that Marshall Toole is the player to be named later from the July 31 trade that brought José Caballero to New York for Everson Pereira.
  • Toole, a 2024 15th-round pick out of Wofford, hit .305 with an .885 OPS in 96 Single-A games for Tampa and stole 44 bases with 14 doubles and 13 triples.
  • He is not on Tampa Bay’s 40-man roster upon arrival and will not be Rule 5–eligible until December 2027.
  • Analysts note development caveats for Toole, including limited home-run power, an inflated BABIP and being a bit old for the level, and he is unranked on top-30 prospect lists.
  • Caballero has produced an .820 OPS in 34 games with the Yankees and has taken over shortstop starts, underscoring why New York completed the deal.
