Yankees Claim Diego Castillo, Designate Jeter Downs for Assignment

Castillo, previously with the Mets and Diamondbacks, to compete for roster spot in spring training.

Diego Castillo, a 26-year-old infielder/outfielder, has been claimed off waivers by the Yankees after being designated for assignment by the Mets.
To make room for Castillo on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated infielder Jeter Downs for assignment.
Castillo had previously been claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks and has also played for the Pirates.
Castillo will compete for a roster spot in spring training with other players including Oswaldo Castillo, Oswald Peraza and Kevin Smith.
Jeter Downs, who was claimed by the Yankees from the Nationals, could see his time with the Yankees end before it started.
