Yankees' Austin Slater Opens Triple-A Rehab With 2-for-3, Nearing Return

The veteran is tracking toward a September return that would add a right-handed option against left-handed pitching.

  • Slater began his assignment Friday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 2-for-3 over five innings in left field.
  • He is slated to play again Sunday and likely Tuesday, after which the Yankees will decide whether to activate him, Aaron Boone said.
  • The 32-year-old has been out since August 5 with a left hamstring strain after appearing in only three games for New York.
  • Acquired July 30 from the White Sox for prospect Gage Ziehl, he brings platoon value versus lefties (.247 with five homers in 73 at-bats and an .814 OPS this season).
  • With rosters expanding to 28 on Monday, the club could summon catcher J.C. Escarra for short-term bench flexibility if Slater is not yet ready.
