Yandex Data Centre in Vladimir Shut Down After Drone Strike

The attack marks a rapid escalation in a drone campaign that is disrupting consumer apps, cloud customers and Russia’s AI hardware capacity.

Overview

  • Yandex said its Vladimir data centre was struck and taken completely offline on Sunday, with no reported injuries as emergency teams assessed damage.
  • The Vladimir hit is the third near‑consecutive strike on Yandex sites after attacks at Sasovo on Oct. 8 and Kaluga on Oct. 9, a sequence that has left two facilities fully suspended and one partially degraded.
  • The strikes damaged facilities that host Yandex’s high‑performance clusters, including supercomputers used for training AI models, which could slow development and take months to replace.
  • More than 80 consumer and cloud services were disrupted, leaving users unable to hail taxis, use payment apps, access cloud files or call some APIs, and businesses that rely on Yandex Cloud have been forced to switch to fallback systems.
  • Moscow’s defence ministry said its air defences downed hundreds of drones as officials pledged new protections while Kyiv frames the attacks as reciprocal to Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres.
