Yamuna Swells to 204.13m in Delhi After Hathnikund Discharge Tops 50,000 Cusecs

The surge leaves the river within 0.37 metres of the official warning mark at the Delhi Railway Bridge under existing flood protocols.

Last year, despite the heavy rainfall, Yamuna missed touching the warning level with the peak water level recorded at 204.38 metres in late September.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the peak discharge touched 54,707 cusecs at 1 AM on Tuesday.

Overview

  • Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage released a peak 54,707 cusecs on July 22, marking the first breach of 50,000 cusecs this monsoon season.
  • Water from Hathnikund takes about 48–50 hours to reach Delhi, where the Yamuna hit 204.13 metres at the Railway Bridge on July 24.
  • The current level remains 0.37 metres below the 204.50 metre warning threshold and falls short of the 100,000 cusec trigger for the first flood alert.
  • Forecasters warn that continued rain in the upper Yamuna basin could push levels higher or cause oscillations over the next two to three days.
  • A Ministry of Jal Shakti panel has proposed raising bridge danger benchmarks, a move critics say ignores siltation and floodplain encroachment issues.
