Yamuna Stays Above Danger Mark as Late-Monsoon Deluge Batters North India

IMD links the flooding to a rare overlap of a western disturbance with monsoon flow that produced an exceptionally wet two-week spell across the region.

Overview

  • Delhi tracked the Yamuna at roughly 207.4–207.47 metres on Thursday, still above the danger mark, with floodwater lingering in low-lying neighborhoods despite a gradual easing trend.
  • Officials reported 8,018 people moved to tents and 2,030 to 13 permanent shelters in the capital, as satellite analysis indicated embankment overflow threatening areas from Geeta Colony to Mayur Vihar and Kashmiri Gate.
  • Himachal Pradesh recorded a fatal landslide in Kullu where NDRF rescued three people and recovered one body, and the SEOC said 1,292 roads were shut statewide after days of heavy rain.
  • Punjab authorities counted 37 deaths, more than 355,000 people affected and over 175,000 hectares of crops damaged, prompting school and university closures extended to 7 September.
  • Jammu and Kashmir faced prolonged transport disruption with the JammuSrinagar highway and other routes blocked by landslides, rail services curtailed on the PathankotJammu section, and thousands of vehicles stranded; Gurugram separately saw severe urban flooding after about 100 mm of rain in four hours.
